Tips vs Sculpted Gel: How They Differ and Which Suits Your Nails

Many guests use one phrase — "make my nails longer" — for two different techniques. Tips and sculpted gel differ in materials, time, durability, removal and price, which can be nearly double. Choosing the wrong one is a common reason a set feels "not worth it". Here's how to tell them apart.

Tips: gluing on a pre-shaped nail

The technician picks a ready-made nail of the right shape and size, attaches it with glue or base gel, blends the join and applies colour on top. Faster, because the shape already exists.

Gel X is a type of tip made of soft, clear gel that covers the whole nail and is attached with base gel instead of glue. It's thinner and clearer, looks more natural, and soaks off rather than needing heavy filing.

Sculpted gel: building the nail layer by layer

No artificial nail here. The technician builds gel onto the natural nail and out onto a form, cures it, repeats to the right thickness and files the shape. Slower and more skill-dependent, but length, curve and thickness all fit your hand.

Dual form is also sculpted gel, using a clear pre-curved mould: gel goes in the mould, is pressed onto the nail and cured. It gives an even surface with little filing — popular for long, curved shapes.

Neither includes colour: 130,000₫ for plain gel up to 280,000₫ for premium Korean gel, plus 30,000₫ if old gel needs removing.

Which to choose

Tips suit you if you need length for an occasion and then remove it, your natural nails are healthy, you want to save time and money, or it's your first time.

Sculpted gel suits you if you want long nails long-term with regular fills, your natural nails are thin and need a protective layer, your nails vary in size or curve so tips don't fit, or you want a custom shape.

As nails grow: fill, not always redo

After 2–3 weeks the regrowth gap shows. Sculpted gel can have a gel fill (190,000₫ per set). Tips that have started lifting are better removed and redone, since the gap traps moisture and dirt.

Removal: not at home

Proper removal at the salon is 30,000₫ and takes about 20 minutes. Prying with nippers or one nail against another is the fastest way to thin your natural nails. VESSCA also removes sets done elsewhere as a separate service.

A third option few mention
