Your First Manicure: Does It Hurt, What It Costs, How to Prepare
A manicure shouldn't hurt — but one step can, and you should know which. What happens at your first appointment, what to choose, how to prepare and three questions to ask before the file comes out.

First-time guests usually ask two things: does it hurt, and what will it cost. Both have concrete answers. This guide walks through your first manicure: what happens, how long it takes, what it costs, and — most importantly — when to speak up.
Does a manicure hurt?
Done properly, no. But one step can hurt, and it helps to know which: cuticle work.
The skin around the nail has two layers. One is a thin, clear layer stuck to the nail plate — it can be pushed back and removed with no sensation. The other is the living skin around the nail, with blood vessels and nerves. Your technician should only remove the first.
Stinging, burning or even one drop of blood is not "normal for a first time". It means the second layer was touched. Tell your technician straight away so they can be gentler or change approach. That is necessary feedback, not being difficult.
Two sensations are often mistaken for pain but aren't:
- Heat under the lamp, usually when a gel layer is a little thick or the nail is thin. Pull your hand out for a few seconds and tell your technician so later layers go on thinner.
- A tight, odd feeling at the tips after extensions — normal for a day or two while you get used to the length.

How a session goes
- Talk first. Your technician looks at your nails, asks about your work and the look you want, then quotes a price. Show reference photos now.
- Prep. Cuticle work, shaping, edge care and light buffing. This decides whether the gel holds — skip it and the set lifts early.
- Length, only if you want nails longer than your own. Usually not needed the first time.
- Colour. Base coat, colour in several thin layers cured between coats, then top coat.
- Finish. Cuticle oil and a hand massage.
A complete set takes 60–90 minutes. One finished in 30 minutes has usually skipped steps, most often the prep.
What to get the first time
VESSCA suggests hand cuticle care + plain gel: about 190,000₫ (60,000₫ prep and 130,000₫ colour). Neat, lasts 2–3 weeks, and shows how your nails react to gel before anything more complex.
Hold off on extensions at first. Long nails change how you type, open bottles and tie your hair — find out what length you are comfortable with. If you want length for a specific occasion, press-on tips (130,000₫) are the lowest commitment.
Before you go
- Don't cut your cuticles at home. Freshly cut skin swells, making the line between the two layers harder to see.
- Don't soak your hands just before the appointment. Nails absorb water and expand; gel applied then can lift at the base as they dry.
- Bring a reference photo. "Light pink" means a different colour to everyone.
- Mention any old gel — removal takes extra time and costs 30,000₫.
Three questions, and when to ask
Ask before the file comes out, not after one hand is done:
- "What will the total be for this set?"
- "Are there any extra charges?" — removal, rhinestones, repairs.
- "Which brand is this gel?" — a salon using authentic gel shows you the bottle.
Afterwards
Gel is fully hard when it leaves the lamp, so you can wash and use your hands normally. For the first two days, avoid long soaks in hot water. Nails grow about a millimetre a week, so after 2–3 weeks the base shows — that's the time to come back, not when it starts peeling. And never pry gel off at home: it bonds more strongly than the top layer of your nail. Removal at the salon is 30,000₫ and takes about 20 minutes.
If you're still nervous
Tell your technician it's your first time. They'll work more slowly, explain each step and check in more often. At VESSCA each technician serves one guest at a time, and if your nails are weak or your cuticles damaged, they'll say so plainly — even if that means a smaller bill.
VESSCA is at 251/30 Le Quang Dinh, Gia Dinh ward (Binh Thanh), Ho Chi Minh City, open 9:00–20:30 daily. Phone +84 933 528 501.
