Which Nail Colour Suits Your Skin Tone? Find Out in 30 Seconds
The same nude looks elegant on one hand and dull on another. The difference is warm or cool undertone — and you can check yours with one simple trick.

Many guests bring reference photos to choose a colour, then find the result doesn't match. The salon didn't mix the wrong shade — the same polish looks different on different skin tones. Knowing your undertone is the most useful shortcut in choosing nail colour, and it takes 30 seconds.
Step 1 — warm or cool undertone
Turn your wrist to natural light (near a window, not under yellow bulbs) and look at your veins:
- Greenish or olive veins → warm
- Blue or purple veins → cool
- Hard to tell, a bit of both → neutral, which suits the most colours
Second check: does gold or silver jewellery suit you better? Gold usually means warm, silver cool.
Undertone isn't about how light or deep your skin is. Fair skin can be warm; deep skin can be cool.

Step 2 — colours by undertone
| Undertone | Suits | Avoid |
|---|---|---|
| Warm | Caramel, burnt orange, brick red, mustard, ivory, olive, yellow-based nude | Milky white, cool baby pink, cool pastels |
| Cool | Rose pink, wine red, lavender, navy, smoky grey, pink-based nude | Bright orange, warm yellow, brick brown |
| Neutral | Almost everything — deeper tones look most refined | Very little |
Step 3 — adjust for depth
Undertone sets the direction; skin depth sets how light or dark.
Deeper skin
Suits the widest range, yet is often the least adventurous. Rich and earthy shades look better on deeper skin than on fair skin: burnt orange, brick red, emerald, mustard. Avoid very pale nude and opaque milky white, which can make hands look dull. For nude, go one shade deeper than your skin or a milky brown.
Fair skin
Suits pastels and sheer shades. Careful with nude too close to your skin, which can look washed out; choose pink nude or nude with a light pearl.
Golden or olive skin
Common in Southeast Asia. Avoid yellow-leaning or pale green shades, which bring out yellowness; pink, deep red and grey balance better.
Two colours that suit almost everyone
- Deep wine red — elegant, any season, work or party.
- Smoky grey — truly neutral and easy to wear.
Test before you decide
Don't judge by the bottle. Ask for a painted swatch and hold it against the back of your hand in natural light. Look for five seconds, look away, then look back. If your eye goes to your hand rather than the polish, it suits you.
