Gel Lifting After a Few Days? 7 Causes and How to Make Your Manicure Last
A set that lifts after a few days is rarely bad luck. It usually comes down to salon prep, the first 24 hours, and daily hand-washing habits.

A beautiful set, and three days later a corner lifts. It happens so often that many people think it's normal. It isn't — a properly done gel set should last 3 to 4 weeks. Here are seven causes, most common first. The first four are down to the salon; the last three are down to daily habits.
1. Oil not removed before the base coat
The number one cause, and nearly invisible to guests. The nail surface always carries natural oil. Without cleaning it with a proper prep solution, gel bonds to oil instead of nail and lifts after 2–3 days. The sign: gel comes off in large, almost intact pieces rather than chipping.

2. Gel touching the cuticle
Where gel touches skin it can never bond — skin keeps shedding. One open point at the edge spreads inward. A careful technician leaves a very fine gap between gel and skin. If your fresh set sits right against the skin, that's where it will lift.
3. Gel too thick
A thick layer cures unevenly — hard outside, soft inside. That soft part is a weak point. This is why Korean technique uses several very thin layers.
4. Edges not capped
The free edge takes the most knocks. If gel covers only the top without wrapping the edge, water and soap get in there.
All four causes above belong to the salon. If three or more nails lift in the first week, tell the salon — it's a technique issue, not your fault.
5. Lots of water in the first 24 hours
Gel is hard under the lamp but takes about a day to fully settle. Washing up, long hot showers or swimming on day one weaken the bond.
6. Hot water and detergent, again and again
The biggest habit-related cause. Hot water makes the natural nail expand slightly while gel doesn't. Repeat that dozens of times and the layers separate at the edge. A cheap pair of rubber gloves adds a week to your set — the most effective tip here.
7. Using nails as tools
Peeling labels, opening cans, prying lids — each leaves a tiny crack at the gel edge. Use your fingertips or knuckles instead.
Every evening
One drop of cuticle oil around each nail before bed — 20 seconds. Moist cuticles don't peel, and cuticles that don't peel don't pull the gel edge with them.
When to go back
One nail lifted after a knock: just repair that nail. Three or more in the first week: tell the salon. VESSCA gives a 5-day warranty — if your set lifts unusually within that time, message us and we'll fix it.
VESSCA is at 251/30 Le Quang Dinh, Gia Dinh ward (Binh Thanh), Ho Chi Minh City, open 9:00–20:30 daily.
