Korean-Style Red Nails: Choosing the Right Red for Your Skin and Occasion

Bright, orange, wine, brick or jelly red: which suits your skin tone, how Korean red differs, reds by occasion and whether red stains.

VESSCA · · 1 min read

Red never goes out of style, but there are many reds: bright, orange-red, wine, brick, sheer jelly. Korean style tends towards reds with depth and translucency rather than opaque, glaring red.

Reds at a glance

  • Classic bright red — bold; suits most skin tones.
  • Orange-red, coral — fresh; warm and deeper skin.
  • Wine, plum — elegant, cool-season; fair and cool skin.
  • Brick, earthy red — warm, soft; warm and neutral skin.
  • Jelly red — light, Korean; most skin tones.

The Korean take

Jelly red in one or two sheer coats, like candy; red on short to medium nails; or depth from wine cat-eye or plum velvet.

By occasion

Office: jelly or brick red on short nails. Evening: glossy wine or red cat-eye. Christmas and Tết: classic red, perhaps one gold accent. Summer: coral.

Will red stain my nails?

Not with a proper base coat, which blocks pigment. Grow-out shows more with dark red; jelly red is more forgiving.
