After a Manicure: When Can You Wash Your Hands, Shower or Swim?

Washing hands right after gel, when to shower, bathe or swim, and habits that keep gel looking good for 2–3 weeks.

Gel is fully cured under the lamp, so you can wash your hands straight away. In the first 24 hours, though, the gel edges are more sensitive. Here is what is fine immediately and what to wait for.

After gel

ActivityWhen
Washing handsImmediately
Warm showerAfter a few hours
Soaking: bath, pool, saunaAfter 24 hours
Dishes or cleaning without glovesAvoid throughout
Hand cream, cuticle oilImmediately

Soaking makes the natural nail swell and shrink, which can lift gel at the edges.

Regular polish is different

Regular polish dries by evaporation and needs 1–2 hours to set. VESSCA uses gel for most colour services, so there is no drying wait.

Extensions

Tips and builder gel are cured on the spot too. On the first day, avoid using new nails to pry or open cans — most breaks happen before you get used to the new length.

Habits that help

  • Gloves for dishes and cleaning products.
  • Dry your hands, especially the tips.
  • Cuticle oil every evening.
  • Never peel a lifted edge — come back instead. Services have a 5-day warranty.

Pool chlorine and sea salt dull gel faster. Before a beach trip, get your nails done 1–2 days ahead and rinse with fresh water after swimming.
